Burroughs Welcomes New Athletic Director, Willie Owens

Burroughs proudly announces the appointment of Willie Owens as the new athletic director at John Burroughs School, effective July 1.

Bringing a wealth of experience, Willie currently serves as AD at Sandia Prep in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over the past three decades, he has held various roles within the institution. In his current position, he oversees 70 coaches who lead 56 girls and boys teams across 23 sports.

Willie’s Coaching Journey

Willie’s coaching repertoire includes track, soccer, golf, and notably, basketball. During his tenure as head boys basketball coach from 1994 to 2017, he steered the team to nearly 400 wins, securing five district championships, two regional championships, and six consecutive state semifinal games. Under his leadership, Sandia has clinched state titles in girls and boys soccer, girls track and field, dance, and girls and boys cross country.

Throughout his illustrious career at Sandia Prep, Willie has amassed numerous accolades. Most recently, he was inducted into the New Mexico High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor — the association’s highest distinction. Additionally, he was honored with the NMHSCA’s Coaching for Character Award in 2022.

Known for his ability to foster strong relationships within the school community and mentor student-athletes, Willie’s impact transcends the realm of sports. Willie’s Vision for Burroughs

“Being an athletic director and having the opportunity to champion character in young men and women is a calling,” remarks Willie. “Burroughs is the next chapter for me, and I am eagerly anticipating this incredible opportunity.”

Hailing from Kansas City, Willie made the move to Albuquerque in the 1980s to pursue studies at the University of New Mexico, where he excelled in football and earned a bachelor’s degree in education. He and his wife, Debbie, have two adult children residing in the Midwest.

Willie will succeed a line of esteemed athletic directors at Burroughs, including Peter Tasker, who will retire at the conclusion of this academic year. Peter, who joined Burroughs in 2004 and assumed the role of athletic director in 2010, has left an indelible mark on the institution.
